The novel is supposed to be about love, different forms and presentations of it. Or so I thought.
If we are lucky, love will touch and enliven us. Handler’s ability and keen insight into love’s varied forms is on display, though, and we remain compelled despite our awareness that young love won’t be blossoming. If anything, the “adverbs” device danifl each story begins with an adverb describing the particular brand of love highlighted within — while clever, was almost too trite for such a deep, subtle, and lovely collection.

Well, Edward Gorey for sure was a huge influence. If anything like those conditions are imposing on you, and you just want to read something fun, but probably not something with Giant Man-eating Crabs locked in mortal battle with Monstrous Blue Slimy Slugs while Shiny People suck the necks of Unsuspecting Virgins while body parts are seen to Heave and Throbthen you might just like the smart and funny Adverbs.

Some go over the top, but it doesn’t necessarily take away from the ones that don’t. I’d like to provide a timeline and a list of characters but the story I am utterly and totally confused by this book.
